Bob the Builder: Ready, Steady, Build! is the third and final series of the original Bob the Builder series to date, and also the final spin-off of the original series to date. It aired between 2010 and 2011.

Production[]

In June 2008, after production of Project: Build It wrapped up, it was announced that the series would be revamped for environmental CGI.[1] The gang has now apparently moved to a place called Fixham Harbour and the show is now animated in CGI animation instead of the traditional stop-motion animation.

It features new characters like Scratch, Rubble, David Mockney, Brad Rad, Dickie Oliver, and Mrs. Toosie. The characters which originated from Project: Build It (like Gripper, Grabber, Splasher, Scrambler, Packer, Ella, Sunny, Saffron, Carlo and Cassia Sabatini) are still present. Bob's parents Robert and Dorothy, Benny, Zoomer, Dodger, Sumsy, Tumbler, Flex and Bristle appear to have their last appearance in Project: Build It currently. There's a segment called Bob's Jobs where a live action child appears on Bob's computer screen and needs help, but Gripper and Grabber come in with stuff like rocks, crates, etc. and Bob finds out a safer way to use them. The series premiered every day on CBeebies between 12 April to 28 May 2010 and later between 26 September to 5 October 2011. This series was produced by SD Entertainment.

Changes and Differences[]

Unlike the previous two series, Ready, Steady, Build! is animated in full CGI, which allows larger and more complicated construction projects that would be too large or expensive for the model sets from the previous two series and has allowed the machines' grill mouths to move as to seem as they are actually talking and not just smiling or frowning. The series still uses the original theme song, but unlike the previous series, the intro uses clips from episodes instead of having special scenes produced. The machines now possess more human-like traits allowing them to be more flexible. The latest episode aired in the UK on 5 October 2011, and in the US on 5 November 2011. The shorts are replaced with segments called Bob's Jobs.

Setting[]

The series takes place in Fixham, a city that dates back to the prehistoric era located by the ocean similar to Bobsville.

Characters[]

The main cast appears, and a new character called Scratch, (who shares similarities to Benny), is added to the main cast. He is the youngest of the team. Benny, Sumsy, Dodger, Flex, Tumbler, Bristle and Zoomer from the previous series do not appear in this series as well as human characters Mr. Beasley, Angelo Sabatini, JJ, Mrs. Barbara Bentley, Sophia Sabatini, Robert and Dorothy.

Trivia[]

  • Before this series was released, a 4D ride at Legoland was made.
  • This is the only Bob the Builder series to be animated by SD Entertainment. To date, it is also the only series in the Bob the Builder franchise to be animated with CGI using the classic series designs.
  • To date, this is the last installment of the classic Bob the Builder series, before the reboot series which takes place on a different universe and continuity. The reboot series was later cancelled for some reason, due to Channel 5 lost the rights to the show. As of now, there has yet to be any official confirmation of future Bob the Builder content.
  • This is the only sub-series of Bob the Builder to have all episodes released in both the UK and US.
  • There are two different openings. The first intro is used in Series 17 and the second intro is used in Series 18 and both mini series. They both have footage from Series 17 and The Legend of the Golden Hammer.
  • This is the only Bob the Builder series to not premiere on Nick Jr. or Nick Jr. 2 in the UK.
  • This is the second time the UK dub of Bob the Builder airs in the US, with that case being in 2023 for the BabyFirst Channel, the first time with the Original Series airing the UK dub on Qubo. While the reason for using the UK dub in the US is still unknown, it is likely because Universal Kids still owns the US dub and the episodes were distributed from WildBrain which currently owns the UK dub. Though this wasn't the first time it aired in North America as it aired previously on Canada's BBC channel BBC Kids while the US dub has always aired on Treehouse.
